Creating an unforgettable fragrance from scratch is a prestigious craft, always shrouded in mystery. Those who do it are called “the Nose”. Their mission is to translate an idea into scent, creating a balance between different raw materials. A Nose must know how to describe odors and have a deep understanding of the infinite facets of each ingredient.

How does one become a Nose?
Scientific studies, particularly chemistry, are the starting point of the training, which then includes specialization at major academies in the sector, where they teach how to develop olfactory memory to be able to identify several hundred raw materials.
We asked Sofia, the creator of In Astra perfumes, to tell us about the world of perfumery and her personal vision of this fascinating work

What does perfume represent to you?
Perfume is communication, it’s emotion. Every emotion we feel has a particular and unique smell. We always remember the scents we’ve experienced in memorable moments of our life, when we were happy or sad, surprised or fascinated by places, emotions, people. Perfume transmits our essence, what we want others to perceive about us. We often spray our favorite fragrance to appear sexier, bolder, or simply for an intimate moment of relaxation.

 

How is an In Astra perfume born?
Every In Astra perfume is born from careful research of the star it’s inspired by: I study the characteristics that help me understand its being. From there, the creative process takes shape: the notes unite in harmonious accords built with raw materials that are often contrasting, coming together to form the essence of a unique, inimitable symphony.

What was your first composition for In Astra?
The first composition for In Astra was Mismar. It had a long creation process because I repeatedly overhauled its structure until I reached a balanced essence that represented my olfactory vision of the magnificent North Star.

What is your favorite raw material?
I particularly love pink pepper essential oil. Its metallic spicy, citrusy, and fruity notes evoke the energy and sunniness of distant worlds. Pink pepper is present in our perfume Antares: wearing it, you can appreciate all the spicy and sparkling facets of this fantastic raw material.
